Gillingham fans in positive mood ahead of trip to Torquay

Gillingham fans are confident their side can keep their good form on the road going with the long trip to Torquay.

MALCOLM SMITH

(Grimsby)

"Torquay are a strong side at home and have beaten Crewe and Carlisle in their last two matches.

"The Gills will fancy their chances, though, and with confidence sky high, a win wouldn’t be a surprise. The loss of Spiller may be costly as his crossing and workrate have been a key part of our recent success.

"With Torquay close to us in the table, this is one we don’t want to lose. They are not Stockport and will pose a much sterner test of our away form."

Prediction: Torquay 1 Gills 1

RICHARD PEPPER

(Manston)

"With our current run of form, we should fear no-one. Since he returned from Lincoln, Gowling has been a different player and along with Matt Lawrence, we must now have one of the best centre-back pairings in League 2. Weston and Barcham are beginning to show signs of the form we know they are capable of, so the outlook is brighter.

"Mathematically, automatic promotion is unlikely as some of the teams above us would have to do far worse than they have done to date and we would have to win almost every match.

"Fortunately, as this is such an inconsistent division, anything is possible, so if we can put another a run of six or seven wins together, we should still be able to do it."

Prediction: Torquay 1 Gills 2

SAM LIVINGSTONE

(Pangbourne)

"This game will be a real test to our automatic promotion contender status. Torquay have played well this season – especially at home – so it will be a test.

"We are just about to run into a congested period of games so it is vital we pick up a few more wins to move us higher up the league.

"I can’t see Gillingham winning, however, due to the confidence in the camp, I can’t see them losing either.

"I’ll plump for a 2-2 with Cody getting a goal and Weston chipping in!"

Prediction: Torquay 2 Gills 2

DAVID GARTH

(Gillingham)

"It seems that we have come a long way in such a short time and expectations have risen to the point where most fans are looking at an away win this weekend.

"Torquay haven't been in the best of form in recent weeks while Gills are brimming with confidence. Our defence is certainly looking much stronger with Gowling and Lawrence having built a good understanding so we don't look like conceding goals at the moment.

"My only concern is our midfield, which I believe can still do better and hopefully will do as Curtis Weston continues his improvement since coming back from injury.

"Andy Barcham looked short on pace at home to Northampton but on the other hand Luke Rooney looked very fresh so maybe Hessie may swap the two for the Torquay game.

"I think that this will be a tough game but we have the in form striker in Cody McDonald and I take him to score the only goal of the game for another three points.

Prediction: Torquay 0 Gills 1

STEVE BREED

(Torquay fan)

"We played well last week at Morecambe but lost it in the last few minutes and that’s the reason we won’t make the play-offs this season.

"We are a good side and play good football but we’re dropping too many points. There are plenty of goals in the side but we’re not strong enough and I think we will finish halfway this season.

"We’re a little worried this weekend against a side a while ago couldn’t win away from home if their lives depended on it. They don’t seem to stop winning now and I’m fearing the worst. All of the players want to play next week against Crawley in the FA Cup and they know they’ll have to perform against Gillingham to get a place in the team.

"Akinfenwa returns to Torquay but I never really rated him. Toward the end of his time at the club he scored a few and did help almost keep us up but as soon as Swansea came calling, he went. I’m sure there will be a bit of friendly banter from the fans.

"The one Gillingham will need to keep an eye on is Eunan O’Kane, who plays just behind the striker."

Prediction: Torquay 1 Gills 2
