Get fit in 2002 - TA style

IF YOUR New Year's resolution is to get fit, then you need the Time to Get Fitta campaign being launched by the Territorial Army. Lt Col Patrick Crowley, who commands the 3rd Battalion, Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment, based at Canterbury, said: "The programme has been specially developed by the TA busy people.

"The majority of TA members work full-time and all of us lead busy lives. On top of this we need to achieve and maintain a certain level of fitness."

The 12-week programme provides a comprehensive, structured approach to getting fit. It covers flexibility and strength as well as aerobic and muscle endurance. By the end participants will have achieved a fitness level which would enable them to pass the TA's annual fitness test.

The programme is available free of charge by registering on-line at www.getfitta.co.uk or calling 0845 602 5000 (local call rate).

The exercises do not require membership of a gym although, like any fitness training programme, participants require a level of commitment. Each session lasts on average 40 minutes, making it easy to fit into the working day.

The longest session, 90 minutes, is towards the end of the programme and is conveniently scheduled on a Sunday. The programme also includes an initial self-assessment to ensure people start the programme at the level most suited to them.

In addition to the 12-week programme, the Time to Get Fitta campaign includes hints and tips from the TA's own physical trainers like 25-year-old L/Cpl Greg Henry, who is a mortgage adviser in civilian life. He is responsible for developing and managing the fitness of members in the 3rd Battalion and recently took all the unit's permanent staff on a healthy hike to Herne Bay.

Throughout the programme physical trainers like L/Cpl Henry offer their personal experience on how they make fitness part of their routine. By going on-line participants will also be able to record their progress and receive advice and support from an interactive question and answer section.
