Fresh warning over drivers' phone use

CH INSP PETER WEDLAKE: says registration numbers will be noted and motorists will still face penalties

A KENT police chief is warning motorists his officers are being extra vigilant following the introduction of tougher penalties for the use of mobile phones while driving.

The new rules, which have been in force for just over a week, mean anyone caught using a hand-held mobile on the move faces a £60 fine instead of the old £30 penalty and three points on their driving licence.

This includes when drivers are queuing in traffic or are stationary at red traffic lights.

Ch Insp Peter Wedlake, based in Medway, said: “Our officers have been briefed to pay extra attention in the look-out for motorists using their hand-held phones while driving.

"People also need to be aware that even if officers do not stop them at the time, registration numbers will be noted and they will still face the penalties.”

He stressed: "There are still some hard-core members of the public who are continuing to break the law and we will target them.”
