A ceiling caved in on a pub full of customers, injuring two people.

The Crown Pub in Rochester High Street had to be evacuated at 8pm on Saturday after the collapse of the ceiling.

Two men were slightly hurt, one suffered a gash to his head, while another chipped his tooth.

Landlord Steve Kray said: “We were very busy at the time, the pub was packed.

“There was so much dust it looked like a bomb had gone off.

“We were very lucky that more people were not seriously injured. It could have been a lot worse.”

Off-duty policeman Ian Whitmill was in the pub at the time.

He said: “The ceiling just suddenly fell down in a cloud of dust, about 6ft away from where I was. There was no warning.

“People had to dive out of the way.

“There was a bit of panic. I helped to get everyone out downstairs and evacuate upstairs as well.

“There was dust everywhere, it filled the whole bar.”

The pub was shut for the rest of the evening. Staff were able to clear the debris on Sunday morning and reopened at lunchtime.
