Couple's safety call after car smashes into bedroom wall

A couple have asked for safety barriers to be erected outside their home after a car crashed into their bedroom wall.

Brian Jordan, 65, was asleep at his home in Lineacre Close, Parkwood, when he was woken up by an almighty bang. His wife Pat was reading in another room.

The noise was caused by a Renault Clio, which had left the road, gone up a grass verge, knocked down a mature fir tree, and smashed through the garden fence before slamming into two water butts placed on the outside bedroom wall.

The people inside the vehicle fled the scene, although the driver later returned to the house to apologise.

Mr Jordan said: “The wall was forced inwards and cracked – the breeze blocks were exposed and the bed had been shunted forward about a foot. I could hear voices outside.

“I was in an excitable state so I just went to the phone in the kitchen and dialled 999.

Two water butts were placed exactly at the point of impact and must have acted as shock absorbers.

"If they hadn’t been there I don’t think I’d have escaped without injury. I was very, very lucky.”

Medway Council has asked the couple to contact them to discuss their safety barrier request. Medway Police are also investigating the incident, at 2am on Sunday, January 4.
