There were six championship records set in the 2011 Kent Schools athletics finals at the Julie Rose Stadium, Ashford, on Saturday.

Records were posted in the intermediate boys’ category by Sean Molloy (Swale) in the 800m with 1min 55.5sec, Aaron Lloyd (Bromley) in the 100m hurdles with 13.76 and Tom Parker (Sevenoaks and Tonbridge) with a massive hammer throw measured at 62.58m.

In the junior boys’ events, there was a record breaking run by George Duggan (Maidstone) in the 800m with 2.2.16 and Cameron Lyttle (Bexley) set a best of 12.56 in the Year 7 boys’ 100m final.

The remaining new best performance was achieved by Alessia Russo (Maidstone) in the Year 7 girls’ 1,500m with 5.07.93.

Kent schools athletes were aiming to achieve entry standards for the English Schools championships in Gateshead next month.

The intermediate boys’ 800m produced a headache for the selectors as all three podium finishers qualified, with Molloy (1.55.5) chased home by Dominic Brown (1.56.67) of Maidstone and Billy Somogyi (1.58.62) of Bexley.

The intermediate girls’ 1,500m produced three national qualifiers led by Ruth Bourne (4.42.73) of Sevenoaks and Tonbridge. Sophie Ayre (5.24) of Medway won the long jump and was third (12.44) in the 80m hurdles and there was more exceptional hammer throwing from Hannah Searing (35.62) of Dartford and Gravesham.
