Eating food where all ingredients are from Kent for a week

As concerns for the planet grow, people are becoming more conscious of where their food is from. Buying locally reduces your carbon footprint while supporting independent businesses. It's one thing buying some Kentish apples every now and then, but how easy is it to only eat food where all ingredients are from the county for an entire week? We set our editorial apprentice, Rebecca Tuffin, the challenge, which she begins today.

I'm excited because I love a challenge but also a little apprehensive that I'll only be eating potatoes and berries for seven days.

I normally have a lot of Mexican and Indian food, or, so I'm going to have to find some replacement seasoning so my taste buds aren't too bored.

How long do you reckon I'll last? Vote in the poll below.

I've also got a very sweet tooth which might pose a bit of a problem.

I do have a habit of scoffing doughnuts and family-sized chocolate bars when I get home from work.

I know I'll be able to get my hands on honey and fruit but will this be enough to calm my cravings? We are yet to find out.

A lack of tea will also be a tough pill to swallow - I might brew up some nettles.

I want to prove it is possible to have healthy, balanced and flavoursome meals without stacking up hundreds of food miles per day.

But I also would like to highlight the setbacks which are stopping people from buying locally.

Convenience and cost will be the main obstacles I suspect.

My will power isn't the best so I'll be very surprised if I survive a whole week without at least a few biscuit-related lapses.

  • From tomorrow, daily updates on what Rebecca has been eating will be published on KentOnline.

If you'd like to get involved in the challenge, send your pictures and where you bought your food to rtuffin@thekmgroup.co.uk or tweet @rtuffinKM with the hashtag #eatlocalkent
