IT chance for 80 young people

A TRAINING centre has been given funding to provide computer skills and employment search training for 17 to 21 year olds. The Pitman Training Centre in Dover has received the money from Kent Learning and Skills Council.

The training programme must be completed by July 2003 and there is funding for up to 80 young people, whether they are students, employed or unemployed. It is part of the government incentive to ensure that everyone within this age range achieves a level two or three qualification, with a view to progressing to higher education by the time they are 30.

Training will take place at the centre in the Market Square on a flexible learning basis. Students will be able to progress at their own learning pace either in office hours, evenings or Saturday mornings.

Director Paula Elliott said: "We are delighted to have the opportunity to train young people again. We provided a similar service this year with a 98 per cent success rate. We are providing work-related training in order for young people to secure long-term employment. Being self-taught on Microsoft applications is not enough anymore. Employers want staff with recognised qualifications."
