Greenwich is the fifth greenest university in the UK, according to a survey.

The People and Planet Green League Table catapults Greenwich from 61st spot last year to number five, while the University of Kent has slipped five places to 94th.

The rapid rise by Greenwich, which languished at 103rd in 2009, reflects its efforts to improving sustainability at its Chatham Maritime (Medway), Greenwich and Avery Hill campuses. It has set aside £6 million for green measures.

The university has boosted recycling rates and facilities, upgraded the heating and insulation systems and implemented a carbon management plan. It is poised to embed sustainability in the student curriculum.

The table looks at the environmental and ethical performance of 142 universities, awarding First Class “degrees†to the best and fails to those doing the least to address their impacts. Greenwich is awarded a “first†while Kent has a “2:2.â€

Neil Garrod, deputy vice chancellor (resources) said the spectacular rise demonstrated the university’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

“This shows how effective our plans have been and how much hard work has been put in by all of our staff. We are well on our way to achieving our goal of being a sector leader in the sustainability field.

“With a multi-campus operation and a diversity of estate ranging from UNESCO World Heritage buildings through 1960s high rises to modern architecturally designed bespoke buildings, sustainability is a challenge.â€

The university believed that it could meet all its official targets and “achieve our own ambitious plans.â€

Nottingham Trent topped the league table, followed by the universities of Gloucestershire, Worcester and Plymouth.

Nottingham Trent University takes top spot for a second time. The universities of Gloucestershire, Worcester and Plymouth are next in the table with Bournemouth and Greenwich tied in fifth place.
