The team at the animal reserve announced the animal’s passing on social media, and described the close bond he had with his keepers.

“Bonz was an immense individual with a character larger than life,” the tribute began.

“From a hand reared beginning he always had a close affinity with his keepers.

“Every morning you'd be welcomed by him rushing down his slide, or his signature look of him sucking his index finger.

“Usually found sat outside in the sun, he would enjoy watching anyone and everyone. He'd usually be showing off to them in typical Bonz fashion of a single chest beat followed by a bang on his slide.”

Bonz was one of the original members of the pavilion bachelor group and was “known by many and loved by more,” the statement added.

The gorilla team said Bonz was mischievous, curious, naughty, but also sweet, adding he would only let a few see his silly side.

“His loss will echo through the park, from his keepers to other members of staff that would pop down to say hello to him,” the post continued.

“We will miss you Bonz and we will forever be grateful for the laughs and memories that you gave us.”
