Ebbsfleet United striker Matt Godden on the two goals which helped sink Maidenhead United

Matt Godden was back in his favourite position and back on the scoresheet for Ebbsfleet on Saturday.

With Fleet boss Daryl McMahon adopting a diamond formation in midfield, Godden was moved from the wing to play up front with Danny Kedwell.

He scored twice and helped create the other as Ebbsfleet beat Maidenhead 3-1.

Godden said: "It was a perfect Saturday. I loved it.

"I was buzzing around the changing-rooms before, when the team was announced, and it showed on the pitch I think.

"We’ve had a couple of conversations, me and the gaffer. He knows my views on where I’m more comfortable playing.

"It’s not my game, really, out wide. I like to be in the box, the six-yard area, 18-yard area, that’s where I base my game, making runs in behind.

"I find it difficult when I’m out wide but it’s a team game and the squad’s together so I’ll do my bit for the team.

"I accept that I’ve got to do my bit for the team as well but I’d rather be down the middle playing off Kedders. That’s where I was on Saturday and luckily I scored the two goals."

Both of Godden's goals came from free-kicks delivered by Jordan Parkes.

The first was a neat cushioned volley back across the goalkeeper, the second a glancing header just as Godden and Parkes were about to be substituted.

"It’s nice for one of them to actually pay off," he said, referring to the opening goal when Parkes picked him out in acres of space at the back post.

"We do work on set-pieces in training but they’ve not, as such, worked this year. I think that’s one of the first set-pieces we’ve scored from so it was nice for it to come off.

"Parksey put in a great little ball for me to get a little glancing header on for the second one.

"I saw the boys getting warmed up on the sidelines and I had a little inkling (I was coming off) so I thought 'I’ll try to do all I can to get on the end of the free-kick' and luckily I did that."

Godden now has three goals for the season and 20 from 46 starts in his Ebbsfleet career.
