Folkestone market set to return this week

A market trader says he hopes people will support him and his colleagues as it returns to full capacity this week.

As the country leaves the second national lockdown from tomorrow, and enters into the three tiered system instead, retail can once again open its doors.

This includes the market in Folkestone, which runs in Sandgate Road on a Thursday and Saturday.

During the four week lockdown, only two stalls could operate, as they were deemed to sell essential items.

Other traders were therefore forced to close down temporarily.

Market manager Paul Clark said this was 'unfair', as other shops selling non essential items were allowed to stay open.

He said: "It has been very hard during second lockdown due to only a few stalls allowed to go back because of it being essentials only.

"This meant most market traders were unable to work, although High Street shops like Wilkos, B&M, Pound Stretcher etc were able to trade and be able to still sell non essential goods.

"This is unfair as we are self employed and not earning any money to be able to survive, even though we were at low risk due to working outside.

"All traders fortunately are able to return to the market this Thursday and Saturday and we are hoping all local people will support the market and the traders again."

Mr Clark says all stall holders will have their temperatures checked prior to work, and will be wearing face coverings when serving customers.

Traders are also planning on expanding their hours over Christmas and will be open every day from Monday, December 14 to Christmas Eve.

The Folkestone Festive Marketplace and The Goods Yard - selling a range of products, plus food and drink - will also be set up on the Harbour Station, Harbour Arm and Customs House from this weekend.

All markets along the harbour will be open 10am to 4pm every Saturday and Sunday before Christmas, and also on December 22 and 23.

A spokesman said: "We all know it’s been a tough year for any independent business, but particularly those who operate on a smaller scale or are just starting out.

"Our goal is that by putting on an outdoor festive market with a wide range of products and produce, you’ll be able to get your Christmas shopping done in one go whilst supporting a number of local businesses."

Another online Christmas market has been set up in Folkestone, the Creative Christmas Online Market.

More than 60 sellers are now signed up to the site, which sells a range of jewellery, artwork, bags, hats, candles and Christmas decorations.
