Shane McGuigan has emulated the achievements of famous father Barry by winning the senior amateur Ulster welterweight title at the first attempt.

The 19-year-old former Kings School Canterbury pupil who is attached to Aylesham Boxing Club beat southpaw Cathal McCauley 26-14 in an excellent contest at Andersontown Leisure Centre in Belfast last week.

It’s 30 years since McGuigan senior won his first bantamweight title, before going onto win gold at the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton.

McGuigan who lives at Dargate near Faversham was at ringside to see Shane’s victory and said: “I’m really proud of what Shane has achieved, he boxed really well.”
