DOVER Athletic manager Clive Walker has set his side a 70-point target in the Dr Martens League's premier division.

With six games left, the Whites are on 59 points following Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw at Havant & Waterlooville. Walker said: “I want us to try and reach 70 points.

“I know it won’t be easy, but you have to have something to aim for, and if we get 70 points then we’ll be able to look back on a pretty successful season.”

If they achieve it, Whites may not be too far away from finishing in second spot if the teams below champions-elect Tamworth continue to stumble in the run-in.

Tony Browne is available again for this Saturday's home league game against Cambridge City after the full-back completed his four-match suspension. But Mark Patterson is again sidelined with a hamstring strain and Walker will have to check on the fitness of Matt Carruthers, who came off with a rib injury at Havant.

The Dover manager intends giving youngsters Craig Cloke, Danny Welch and Buster Smissen a first-team run out as soon as possible.

He said: “I’ve got to see what they’re like at this level and you never know, we might unearth another pearl like Dean Readings.”

Readings’ consistent performances in central defence have indeed been a real bonus, but Whites’ more pressing concern is to find a proven goalscorer for next season.

Dover have another home game on Monday night when Hednesford will be the visitors.
