A man has been remanded charged with being involved in the production of a controlled drug after police officers raided a cannabis factory in Dover at the weekend.

Officers went to the former old people's home in Folkestone Road, Dover on Saturday and seized more than 1,700 cannabis plants from one of the flats, together with specialised heating and lighting equipment.

Hai Van Vu, 25, of no fixed address, was arrested and charged with being involved in the production of a controlled drug.

He appeared in court on Monday and was remanded.

Police described it as a "large and sophisticated cultivation set up" and said the electricity meter had been by-passed.

The building, called Amsterdam House, used to be a residential home, and then became a hostel for asylum seekers.

Since then it has been converted into flats and is currently being renovated.

All the plants were taken away. The pots in which they were growing, together with the equipment used to make them grow, filled four skips which were also removed.
