Lib Dem candidate Sarah Smith calls for Dover to be included in technology traffic scheme

Dover is not included in a highways strategy which aims to alert motorists to some of the country’s most congested roads.

Sections of the national road networks will get sensors installed by Highways England to monitor vehicle movement.

They will relay information to a central control system which can divert drivers through alternative routes.

Lib Dem candidate for Dover and Deal, Sarah Smith, believes this is something Dover needs.

She said: “It’s what we need to solve gridlock here, but Dover gets no mention.

“There is no mention of the A2 and A20 getting this technology yet the need for such systems is acute now and will rise with the introduction of border exit checks in April.

“It is disappointing that we don’t have an MP keeping up with these developments and making sure Dover is first in line.”

On Wednesday, April 1 Highways England will take over £15bn road’s budget from the Highways Agency.

It will affect the A14 in Cambridge, the A303 in the south-west, the A30 in Hampshire, the A1 north of Newcastle, the A556 in Cheshire and the A46 in the East Midlands.

KentOnline previously reported that new border checks, due to be implemented on April 8, are expected to cause more congestion for Dover’s roads.
