Brazen, bold and beautiful, any visit to Kent wouldn’t be complete without a trip to Margate.
The resort has been drawing in holidaymakers for generations and its eclectic mix of attractions mixes modern with traditional seaside fun.
Whether your preference for summer fun, one thing is for sure that – you will not be disappointed in Margate as the town has it all.
The Turner Contemporary Gallery has been home to many exhibitions since it opened more than five years ago. A stunning building inside, the Turner is a beacon of hope for a town that is slowly returning to its former glories after a time in the doldrums.
For those seeking the old-fashioned thrill of the seaside, look no further than at Dreamland.
A hop, skip and a jump away from the Turner on the other end of Marine Drive, this traditional theme park is the ultimate experience for anyone seeking nostalgia. Perfect for children, its many attractions include the fully restored scenic railway, dodgems, a big wheel and roller disco.
A short walk from the front is Margate’s Old Town.
Head there to browse the many shops selling a wide range of unique crafts. Before you go though make sure you drop in on one of the cafes the town has to offer to rest your legs.
Don’t miss: If it is relaxation you are after, head to Margate Main Sands. Close to the arcades and cafes you could easily lose days sitting on the beach and watching the world go by. As well a the vast stretch of golden sand, there’s a bracing tidal bathing pool, deckchairs to hire and traditional fun. A donkey ride and an ice cream cone will be remembered forever.
Time to explore: Mystery surrounds the origins of the breathtaking enigma that is the Shell Grotto. Why not pay a visit and gaze in wonder at the 4.6 million shells embedded in mosaic patterns along the 70ft of winding underground passages and the chamber to which they lead. It’s at Grotto Hill – tucked away about 500 yards or so from the front. More at www.shellgrotto.co.uk
Best-kept secret:Situated right in the heart of the Old Town, the Lifeboat is a taste of what great pubs used to be. With real ale in the barrels and real steak in the steak and ale pies, it promises a warm welcome. You can find it at 1 Market Street.
Getting there: You can get the train to Margate from London in a smidge shy of 90 minutes. Alternatively, follow the well-worn path of millions of daytrippers and head down the Thanet Way (A2) until there’s only the English Channel in front of you.
