They say a red Polo GTI had been travelling towards Farningham when it was involved in a collision with a white Mercedes Sprinter travelling in the opposite direction.

Officers attended the scene along with South East Coast Ambulance Service, and are now seeking witnesses to the collision.

Four other occupants in the Polo were taken to hospital where two remain, one in a serious but stable condition and the other in a stable condition.

Two men believed to be the drivers of the vehicles were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and were later bailed to return to the police station.

Kent Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) is carrying out enquiries and officers are appealing to anyone who saw what happened, or has relevant dashcam or CCTV footage, to come forward.

The incident is the latest in a series of incidents on the same stretch of road.

Last year a woman aged in her 60s died after suffering serious injuries in a collision on the A20 at Farningham, on Wednesday January 19.

An inquest later heard how Susan Robertson, from West Kingsdown, had veered into an oncoming green Ford Transit after a suspected medical episode.

The following month police launched an appeal after a black BMW, which had been driving towards Farningham on the A20, was involved in a collision with a white Citroen Van travelling in the opposite direction.

Anyone with information on the latest incident should call the SCIU appeal line on 01622 798538, or email sciu.td@kent.police.uk, quoting reference RY/KA/015/22.
