Scott Wagstaff marked his first league start for Charlton with a goal in the 2-0 win at Brighton in League 1 on Tuesday night.

Wagstaff turned in a loose ball from Grant Basey’s cross to score the Addicks’ second goal after 37 minutes and seal their first away win since August.

Earlier Deon Burton had headed the away side in front after 29 minutes when he got on the end of a Nicky Bailey free-kick.

Brighton’s best chance had come came early-on when James Tunnicliffe headed against the bar.

At the other end Dave Mooney almost added a third goal, but was denied by a brilliant double save from Graeme Smith.

Addicks boss Phil Parkinson said: “I thought it was a very professional performance.

"We took the spirit we showed at Yeovil into this game in terms of the professionalism of the team. I thought that was as good as we've played away from home this season.

"It wasn't always pretty and was a difficult pitch to play on. We were resilient as a team and I lost count at the number of blocks we got in on the edge of our box; people throwing themselves in front of the ball to protect the goal.

"That's the kind of mentality you need to get a clean sheet, and we showed that.”
