Stuart Goodman grabbed a late winner as Canterbury Hockey Club won 4-3 at Chelmsford on Sunday to keep their Men's Conference East title hopes alive.

Canterbury's victory kept them in third, and they remain just two points adrift of leaders Oxted, who were 2-0 winners at Holcombe.

Prolific marksman Lloyd Norris-Jones gave Canterbury a 19th minute lead but Chelmsford equalised on the half hour courtesy of Adrian Palmer's penalty corner strike.

The same player struck again seven minutes into the second half before two goals in a minute, from Norris-Jones and Ed Butcher, regained the initiative for Canterbury.

When former Canterbury man Ross Henderson made it 3-3 just before the hour the game looked set to finish in stalemate but with four minutes to go Goodman pounced for the winner.

Canterbury Ladies suffered a surprise home defeat as they were beaten 2-1 by Poynton in the Slazenger EHL Women's Premier Division.

The visitors were ahead as early as the third minute through Helen Armishaw, and, after Susie Rowe had equalised in the second half Sarah Newman's 68th minute penalty corner goal proved decisive.

The defeat sees Canterbury in fifth spot, level on 22 points with Slough and Clifton.
