Two men were seriously injured on Wednesday morning in a crash between two lorries on the A2 at Bridge.

Investigations into the accident on the coastbound carriageway were still taking place on Wednesday afternoon, with one man taken to the QEQM Hospital in Margate and the other airlifted to a London Hospital.

Both men’s injuries were described as very serious.

The driver and passenger were injured after reports their lorry collided with a broken-down lorry on the coastbound carriageway and overturned.

Firefighters from Canterbury, Faversham and Aylesham, along with the Maidstone-based urban search and rescue team responded to the scene around 9.45am.

The road was closed in both directions, between the A2050 at Canterbury and the A260 at Denton, to allow for the Kent Air Ambulance to land.

The Londonbound carriageway was reopened around midday.

Queues stretched back coastbound as far as the A28 Thanington Road, while traffic was also diverted through Bridge and Wincheap.

The coastbound carriageway is not expected to reopen until 7pm Wednesday, while highways officers assess if the road needs resurfacing.

Ch Insp Roscoe Walford said: "We are dealing with a very serious collision and the road is likely to be shut for a considerable period as it will take time to recover the HGV which is on its side.

"There is also a possibility that the road will need resurfacing before we can reopen it. We are asking drivers to avoid the area.

"If they are heading for Dover they should use the M20 and the A20. We would also like anyone who witnessed the accident to contact us."
