A 10-mile stretch of the A2 is set for weeks of overnight closures as part of an extensive resurfacing scheme.

National Highways has confirmed part of the road, between Faversham and Canterbury, will be shut off to motorists on weeknights between September 18 and November 4.

The eastbound carriageway, heading towards Dover, will be closed between Brenley Corner and Bridge from 8pm to 6am, from Monday, September 18, to Friday, September 29, and overnight on Thursday, November 2, and Friday, November 3.

The westbound road towards Faversham and the M2 between Bridge and Brenley Corner will close on weeknights – again from 8pm to 6am - from Monday, October 2, to Wednesday, November 1.

During this period, a diversion route will be in place via the A299 Thanet Way and A256 - measuring out at slightly more than 35 miles.

A National Highways spokesperson said: “Thousands of motorists who use this stretch of road will feel the benefits of a smoother, safer, and quiet road surface, with the resurfacing work also helping to prevent the need for future unplanned closures.

“To minimise disruption we’ll be carrying out this work weeknights when there is less traffic on the roads. The work will be completed by November 4, subject to favourable weather conditions.

“There is no standard time for how long the resurface will last as it depends on a number of factors such as traffic flow, weather, road traffic collisions, fuel spills etc.

“It’s usually 10-13 years before the surface needs to be resealed.”
