A new boss for a beleaguered Kent health trust has been announced.

Susan Acott, who has been the interim chief executive East Kent Hospitals since last October, has taken over as the permanent leader following a 'national search'.

Her appointment comes after Matthew Kershew - dubbed 'The Axeman' - stepped down from the role last year to take up a senior post with a health think-tank.

The trust, which looks after hospitals in Canterbury, Thanet, Ashford, Dover and Folkestone, has come under fire for its poor A&E waiting times.

But trust chairman professor Stephen Smith says Ms Acott has high ambitious for the region.

“I am delighted that Susan is remaining in East Kent in this leadership role," he said.

"She combines excellent knowledge of local healthcare needs with extensive NHS leadership experience, and is passionate about the role of clinical leadership and education in ensuring high quality services for patients."

Ms Acott said: "It has been a privilege to meet and work with excellent and committed staff at East Kent Hospitals over the past six months, and I am very much looking forward to continuing to work with staff, patients and the communities the Trust serves to provide excellent hospital services for local people.”

The new chief executive has previously held the same position at Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust.

She has also held senior positions in the NHS in Manchester, Merseyside, York and London.
