Snow and ice caused problems for Monday morning's commute as many people returned to either work or school after the Christmas holidays. Waste collections across the district were also cancelled because of the freezing conditions.

Driving was hazardous throughout the morning after overnight snow and freezing temperatures.

Conditions were particularly poor on the A299 Thanet Way in both directions between junction 7 of the M2 (Faversham/Brenley Corner) and the A291 (Herne Bay).

In Whitstable, conditions were poor due to snow in Cromwell Road at the B2205 (Oxford Street) and on Sunday evening motorists had difficulty travelling up and down Borstal Hill.

Canterbury City Council were forced to suspend refuse collections on Monday morning.

Both landfill and recycling collections were cancelled due to the dangerous, icy conditions.

Last Friday's cancelled collections were due to take place on Monday.

Residents are being requested to leave their waste out until it can be picked up when conditions improve. The council is monitoring the weather, but the forecast predicts prolonged freezing temperatures.

When collections do resume, landfill waste will be a priority. There are no garden waste collections this week and the garden waste vehicles will be used to assist with the backlog.

Elsewhere in the county, snow and ice also caused problems on both Hart Hill and the A252 Northern By-Pass in Charing, near Ashford. Police closed Hart Hill in both directions between Stonestile Farm Road and Warren Street/Stalisfield Road.

Drivers were also being urged to take care on the A252 in both directions between the A20 Maidstone Road/School Road/Sayer Road and Faversham Road.

No problems were reported on public transport.

The Met Office is forecasting a severe frost for Monday night with a chance of snow showers in the north of the county.

There will be lows of minus 5C.
