About 100 metres of the road was flooded after a water main burst – the water was about 3ft deep.

The London Fire Brigade said it was alerted at 5.49pm and crews from Bromley, Sidcup, Orpington, Beckenham and Lee Green fire stations attended.

There were no reports of any injuries and firefighters left the scene at 9.33pm.

A spokesman said: “Road closures were in place after a 250-metre water main burst due to heavy rainfall.

“Crews used sand bags and temporary freestanding flood barriers, which slot together to control fast flowing water in the area and prevent flood water spreading into nearby properties.

“If you experience flooding as the uncertain weather continues, we would encourage you to follow our safety tips.”

These are:

  • Put people before property – move families and pets upstairs or to a high place if your home floods;
  • Stay away from flood water and talk to children about how dangerous it can be to play in the water;
  • During a flood, don’t go out unless you have to. Remain calm and call 999 if you are in danger.
