Village cricketer clinches promotion after mobile phone footage of YouTube stream confirms umpires were right to give him not out

Mersham Sports pulled off one of the most memorable wins in the club's history to guarantee Kent Village League promotion - after a rare incident involving Zing bails, a camera and calls for DRS.

Light-up bails and stumps are more often seen at televised games but Mersham have their own set thanks to generous sponsor Physios 4 U, who are owned by player Kartik Tewari.

And it was these very set of bails which saved the day for their batsman Chris Darlington against Worth.

Worth had set 268 off of their 40 overs and thought they had the game in their hands after running out Darlington, who was on 16 at the time, with two overs to go.

However, the batter was given not out after umpires had seen the removal of the bails, which lit up early, by the Worth wicket-keeper.

With the game being live-streamed on YouTube, Worth players could be seen on the feed making TV signs with their hands as they called for a review.

The on-field umpires made clear that the on-field decision would stand but offered their captain Amjad Awan a chance to watch the footage back to assure him the call was correct before the game restarted.

Awan calmly made his way to the boundary edge to watch footage on a phone before returning to tell his players the bails were taken early.

Darlington then made the most of his reprieve in the most thrilling possible way. With four needed off the last ball, he went down on one knee and swept it past fine leg to end up 33 not out as Mersham won by two wickets.

Mersham captain Mark Gill said: "It was the most exciting game I've played in - it had everything.

“Chris' shot to win it was unreal but without the light-up stumps, he'd have been long gone. We all have our sponsor Kartik to thank.

"One of the umpires out there at the time had clearly seen the bails come off early but when he gave it not out, the Worth players weren't best pleased.

"We know and respect the league rules which state you can't use the live stream as a way of giving decisions - but we all felt that if they watched it back, they'd understand why the call was made and we could all get on with the game, so that's exactly what we did.

"The umpires were never going to change their mind but credit to the Worth captain Amjad.

“It was very close but he had a look at the video, told the players what he'd seen and it worked wonders in clearing it up before a thrilling finish."

Victory guaranteed Mersham promotion to Kent Village Division 1 with a game to spare.
