Big field expected for road race

MEMBERS of Ashford and District Roadrunners are staging the 17th annual 10km road race at Sandyhyurst Lane on February 6.

The event is restricted to 500 runners and most years there is a full house. The race attracts some of the best road runners from across the south east.

The run is again being sponsored by Park Mall Shopping Centre, along with Sweatshop, and there is usually a unique memento for each finisher.

The event starts at 11am and, given the right conditions, there might well be a threat to the two of the longest standing road records in the south east.

Both are held by runners from what was GEC Avionics, with Debbie Percivalps women’s record of 35:15 standing since 1993 and Spencer Barden’s men’s record of 30:05 since 1997.

The race is over a fast, scenic course through the attractive country lanes around Westwell. For those looking for a fast time, a caller will be positioned halfway to shout out the elapsed times.

More details about the club and the race can be found on the club website at www.ashford-runners.co.uk
