Ashford's Leon Camier endured a frustrating afternoon at Monza on Sunday

Ashford World Superbikes rider Leon Camier was left cursing his luck after coming out on the wrong end of a Jekyll and Hyde display at round four in Italy.

Camier was fuming with himself when a rider error saw him qualify in 10th at Monza but he managed to improve two places to end race one, which was won by Eugene Laverty, his first in World Superbikes, in eighth.

A dynamite start in race two put Camier in second place, but his podium hopes ended when he crashed out at the second Lesmo corner. He was, however, quick to apologise to his Aprilia Alitalia team. Laverty took the chequered flag first to make it a win double.

“I have to say sorry to all of my team for the crash in the second race,” said Camier. “I was feeling good after the start and the first corner was good and I moved up into second and everything was fine.

“I wasn’t particularly pushing, just trying to get everything to flow and then in turn six I let the brake off mid-turn. A podium was definitely on the cards which would have been a great end to a couple of races where we’ve had nothing but back luck.”

Camier’s personal woes were shared by the whole of his Aprilia Alitalia garage with teammate Max Biaggi contriving to lose both races from winning positions – despite possessing far and away the quickest bike in the paddock.

The Kent ace’s troubles leave him down in eighth in the overall standings, 87 shy of early-season leader Carlos Checa, and preferring to look to round five in America than reflect on his under-par Italian weekend.

“We’ve just got to look ahead to Miller at the end of the month and hope our luck changes,” he added.
